Elisha Reese and Margaret Serena Chambers

Elisha Reese (aka Elijah Reese, Elisha Reece, Elijah Reece, Elisha Rees, Elijah Rees), DOB: 3/8/1834 in Buncombe County, NC (maybe in an area that later became Madison County, NC) to Preacher/Elder William "Billy" Rees and Mary Jane Freeman. He was a brother to my direct ancester, Green Hill Reese. Elisha married Margaret Serena Chambers (aka Irene Chambers, Sereny Chambers) on 1/1/1860 in Madison County, NC. Margaret died in 1889 and Elisha died 2/18/1891 in Madison County, NC. They are buried at Gabriel's Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 115 N. Turkey Branch Rd, Mars Hill, Madison County, NC (Coordinates: Lat: 35.8761 Long: -82.5084)

They had 7 children that I'm aware of. There is more information on each child further along in this post, but for now here they are:
* Robert Dawson Reese (DOB: 3/23/1860 in Madison County, NC, DOD: ? ) married ? . I have not found any more about this male child so he may have died young.

NC Troops, 1861-1865, A Roster, by Weymouth T. Jordan, Vol XV, Pg 237
"Reese, Elisha, Private"
"Enlisted in Madison County, NC at age 26, July 20, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Musician (Fifer) prior to November 26, 1862. Reported absent on sick furlough with measles on November 25, 1862. Returned to duty and was reduced to ranks prior to March 1, 1863. Reported present through April 30, 1863. Deserted at Clinton, TN, prior to July 1, 1863."

Elisha and Martin V. Rees joined the CSA NC 64th Infantry, Co. G on the same day, 7/20/1862. But I also have Martin enlisting with his other brothers, Edmond, Levi, and William Joseph on 7/15/1862 in CSA NC 64th Infantry, Co. D. I do not have record of Elisha in any other company.

The family were, by principle, against slavery and so they supported the Union side. But some of the sons served in the Confederate Army until they deserted. They deserted together and came home when their father died in 1863. While gathered together at a church in Madison County (maybe Bone Camp meeting house or Bull Run Baptist Church) then Confederate renegades surrounded the church and abducted Levi. Martin managed to escape through a window. His brothers Moses and Thomas were either abducted, killed by the renegades or escaped to die later in fighting on one side or the other. This was the last straw and Edmond, William, Martin and Patterson saddled horses and rode to Greeneville, TN to enlist in the Union Army. The trip to Greeneville, TN took several days, winding through the back trails of Madison County from Bull Creek to Allen Gap on the Tennessee state line to avoid Confederate patrols, and then crossing the Nolichucky River into Greeneville County, TN. They were assigned to the U.S. 2nd NC Volunteer Mounted Infantry, which was, at the time, disorganized and dismounted from a lack of suitable horses. Edmond was assigned to Co. A. William, Martin and Patterson were assigned to Co. B. The 2nd NC Mounted Infantry Mounted Infantry, which was, at the time, disorganized and dismounted from a lack of suitable horses. Edmond was assigned to Co. A. William, Martin and Patterson were assigned to Co. B. The 2nd NC Mounted Infantry stayed on the move constantly in TN, engaging the Confederates as they were found, and foraging for supplies. They were in the battle at Cumberland Gap.
